BSM: What about career highlights?
PK: Actually, what initiated the tour we did over the summer was being invited to play at the International Pop Overthrow Festival in L.A. I don’t know if
you’ve heard of it. It’s been going on for about four years now, and this guy named David Bash organizes it, he’s a music writer... and he hand picks the bands he wants to play, I guess in response to how commercial and horrible music festivals have become, like South By Southwest, with all the major label bands and whatever. So he wanted to start a festival with bands that he loves, and I guess it kind of evolved from there. It was really neat, because I haven’t played L.A. since I was in the Drop Nineteens, and it was good to see what a thriving pop scene there is out there. I’ve been playing in Boston a lot where everyone knows you, so it’s kind of like “Paula’s playing, no big deal,” you know? That was a new audience, an audience who really liked the kind of music we were playing. So it was nice to know that there’s other stuff out there. Not that I don’t like Boston, but you know what I mean. There was another thing
we played in New York, last weekend, and it was good.
BSM: What about the future? What are you aiming for?
PK: I have no illusions of grandeur. I don’t need to be a huge rock star. I don’t think that’s my personality, anyway. I’d like to make a living doing music. I wouldn’t mind writing for other people. In fact, recently I wrote a song and sent it to Poison. It’s like a metal ballad.
BSM: Really? Was this premeditated?
PK: I have a friend that works at Warner-Chappel in L.A....and she said, Poison’s looking for songs. So, yeah, it’s like one of those 80s metal ballads. It’s called “Never Been So Gone (As When You Left Me).” It doesn’t suck, it’s alright! As far as the immediate future, we’re taking January off, and then we’re coming back in February. We’re going to be doing more country-wide tours with this band. It’s not so much that I love being on the road, but I love playing for new audiences.
BSM: Has the reception been generally good?
PK: Yes, it’s been really good.
BSM: Thank you, Paula.
